The nene is a type of goose that nearly went extinct, thanks to the introduction of mongooses on the islands (which were introduced to control chickens and rodents).  The nene is a ground-nesting bird and the mongooses would eat their eggs, driving them to the brink of extinction.  I'm not sure how they are doing it, but conservation efforts have resulted in a partial rebound of the nene population.
