Ralph Hosmer worked for the US Department of Agriculture, and in Hawaii in the colonial days, established this experimental forest to see what productive trees for use as lumber would grow well here.  Only 20 of 86 species survived.  Hawaiian volcanic soil, though rich, is shallow and does not favor trees useful for lumber production.
