Silverswords are unique and sensitive plants. They grow for upwards of 50 years, the bloom shoot can appear and take anywhere from 5-20 years to actually bloom, and last for 2 months. In order for pollination to happen, many have to be blooming at the same time. Their roots are shallow and easily damages. It's any wonder they are endangered, and hikers absolutely MUST stay on the trails. This one was protected in the middle of the parking lot at the top summit of Haleakala crater, where we witnessed the sunrise.
