Not too far down the road the scenery changes and we came upon a stand of Norfolk pine trees, brought here in the 1800's because they were tall, straight trees that could be harvested for ship building. They didn't fare well, however, in the relatively shallow soil that is typical in Hawaii. Some stands here and there do survive.
