Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Over in north central Wyoming is the famous Devil's Tower, which was made extra famous by it's central part in the 1970's move Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  It is all that is left of an old volcanic vent.  The lava pushed its way upwards and hardened into the hexagonal basaltic columns that make up this plug.  Then, gradually, the land around it eroded away leaving the much harder basalt in place.  Over the years, the hexagonal columns have broken away and now quite a few litter the base.  It's a very interesting place to visit and a pleasant hike.
