East Glacier Hotel, Glacier National Park, Montana
America's love affair with its National Parks was in its heyday in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The nation had just expanded westwards and all the natural wonders were the stuff of fantasies. When the railroads first punched through, and standards of living began to increase, people began taking trips to these far off places. Large lodges to accommodate these new visitors were built- several in Glacier, several in Yellowstone (not to mention Banff and Jasper to the north in Canada). East Glacier Hotel is at the southeast corner of the park. It is gigantic and dates to around the turn of the 20th century. This is the main lobby area, in its original splendor with giant tree trunks supporting the high roof.
