Yellowstone NP, Mammoth Hot Springs (Minerva Terrace)
Minerva Terrace is also currently dead, but earlier in the 20th century, it was alive and colorful.  As the region is volcanically and seismically active, subtle underground shifts routinely shut off and later reopen the channels through which the heated water flows.  Any day this could become active again, and in a year or two would be teaming with algae and bacteria all over again.
