Mount St. Helens National Monument
Mt. St. Helens, located in Washington, blew it's top on May 18, 1980 (my friend Dave's birthday). It has served as a very accessible natural laboratory for volcanic studies and how a region regenerates itself afterwards. It is a very beautiful, if austere place. The closer you get to the summit, the more lifeless it becomes. Spirit Lake is now dead, full of timber laid waste by the explosion. Mt. St. Helens is just south of Mt. Rainier.
