| Ellis County | |
This is the fourth courthouse to server Ellis County in Waxahachie. It was designed by James Gordon and completed in 1897. It is a mix of Victorian and Romanesque styles. There is some lore associated with this particular courthouse. It is said that one of the artisans carving the statues that grace the exterior fell in love with one Mabel Frame, the daughter of the proprietor of the guest house where he was staying. One carving is of her in her resplendent beauty. However, she did not love him back. Jilted, the carvings got more and more grotesque as you move around the courthouse. Unfortunately, during my visit, the courthouse was undergoing a major
renovation. I will have to return at some future date to do it
justice.
