| Deep Ellum There's no area quite like it in the Metroplex. Next to downtown, it now features loft living in addition to it's rich musical heritage. "Ellum" is a 1930's colloquialism of "Elm", one of the prime streets that runs through the area. In that time jazz was king. Now it's any kind of modern music you can think of, including it's biggest export- Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. ©1995 by Jeffrey L. Cooper |

| Main St. D. TX. 1950 ( on the Gypsy Tea Room) |
by Frank Campagna |
| I'm not sure what was in this building in 1995, the year this photo was taken. The mural is not there anymore. In 2001, the Gypsy Tea Room occupies the building behind this wall. I love murals like this on the side of buildings- it adds character. Unfortunately, other graffiti-minded people had to add their initials to it. | |

| Near the Fairgrounds Urban art can be found all over this area. This is one of my favorites, near the State Fairgrounds by the State Bar. It's in an alleyway, so you would completely miss this if you didn't explore. I'm particularly fond of the detail, including the doorbell (oddly placed on the side of the building) that acts as a pendant on her necklace. |

| Good Latimer Tunnel The Good Latimer Tunnel is an historic tunnel the exits the north side of Deep Ellum. It was nearly torn down when nearby apartments were built, but protests pounded some sense into the developers so that they would change the character of the area they were building in, of which the character was the very reason they were building in there in the first place. Long story short, every so often, local artists get together and repaint the walls of the tunnel with new art. This batch is from 1995. |

Note: Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is proposing the destruction of this historic tunnel for a light rail transit station. Please visit here to read more about it and make your feelings known to DART. |

| Ann Richards Once and former governor, the venerable Ann Richards only served one term, and lost to George W. Bush. I liked her, myself, and yes, she did ride a motorcycle. This tribute to her also graces the Good Latimer Tunnel. |
