From the pit, these are the steps back up.  You have to watch your step, because not only are they uneven, but with the moving water, you tend to lose your frame of reference.  In all honesty, I am surprised that this is open at all in our litigious society.  It would be rather easy to injure oneself by falling off these steps, hence inviting lawyers of all types to hang around just waiting.
