San Jacinto Monument, Houston, Texas
The San Jacinto Monument is the tallest monument in the world at 570 feet
(according to Guinness). This Art Deco tower was built in the late 1930's
to commemorate the Battle of San Jacinto, whereby Sam Houston, in 1836, defeated
Mexico in a stunning surprise attack that marked the turn in the war against
Mexico for Texan independence. Ten years later, Texas joined the US, and
in the following war with Mexico, about 1/3 of the present US was won in that
battle. So, to say the least, this monument commemorates a pivotal moment
in US history.
