The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio is famous for it's Missions, and first and foremost among them is the Alamo.  Many folks do not know that the Alamo was actually a mission, but rather think of it as a fortress.  It was founded in 1718, and was the first mission in San Antonio.  It's real name was San Antonio de Valero, and was about halfway between the missions in East Texas (later moved to San Antonio as well) and missions in Mexico.  It's fame arises from the Battle of the Alamo, fought on March 6, 1836.
